During the Portuguese administration in Sri Lanka, the area was named Grande Passo. The name was anglicised during the British administration to become Grandpass. It was also known as Groote Pas, Pas Nacollegam and Pas van Goensdorp to the Dutch people.
In the late 1800s Samuel Perera Jayatilaka built the Sri Jayatilakaramaya Viharaya on Swarna Chaitya road. The Temple houses a Bodhi tree, shrine of the Buddha, Navagraha statues, Ganesha shrine and Daddimunda Shrine. The Temple remains safely kept by the honourable monks who have for over 5 generations maintained the temple for the citizens nearby. The head monk is Dhamma Ananda Thero he teaches at the Dhamma School nearby for children to learn Buddhism.[2]
