YouTube rewind 2019 is here and again it was hit with major criticism. YouTube posted its annual recap of what happened during the year. The huge video-sharing platform was determined to make up for what happened with last year’s disastrous rewind video. Last year’s video ended up being the most disliked video on the platform based on the fact that it alienated so many of its most-watched and popular creators. So this year, they tried to listen to what the audience had to say.
They entirely changed the way they created the video. Typically, the would have creators on the platform come and film around trending topics that happened that year. It was a way to put the platform’s most popular creators into scenarios that we wouldn’t typically see them. I saw YouTube Rewind as being a creative way to bring all these creators to tell a story of what people were talking about throughout the year. Instead, they decided to make it a pure recap video of the creators. The video showed the top 10 most-watched creators, videos, music videos, etc. YouTube basically made a Spotify wrapped playlist for videos. A worldwide complication video that anyone could have made at home. When looking at this it doesn’t scream at you that a multi-billion-dollar company created this video. The video made it seem like YouTube needed to cut back on their spending and just make the cheapest video they can make. They didn’t create any original content and bring creators from around the world together to create something special.
Lots of people criticized the video, as it already has 3.9M dislikes, more than double the likes it has received. The comments are already saying that the video is “lazy” and “didn’t try”. It lacked the flair and uniqueness that YouTube can create. It wasn’t a video that produced some sort of entertainment but just made a list. It was the safest move that YouTube could’ve made. The could part of the video was that it had the most-watched creators, which in the past it didn’t have. The thing that I like the most about rewind was that it was a video where you are surprised to see what YouTubers are in the video and what trend they are participating in. Overall, it lacked the special something that everyone looks forward to with YouTube Rewind.
