Humility (A Poem)

Humility

Hubris is a plague to humanity.

We think we are bigger than the earth we stand on.

We tower above all worldly beings with our heads in the clouds

and dare to assume that a god out there (if there is one)

knows our names, and is aware of our existence.

We think we are all-powerful (god was created in our image)

and cannot be destroyed by anything in the universe.

Who would think that all of mankind could be taken down

by a single microscopic organism?

A creature smaller than what the eye can see

is one that can dismantle all of our society.

We are not as big or as powerful as we like to think we are.

Humbled, we humans retreat into the safety of our homes,

remembering our mortality and accepting our place in the universe.
