Beach Volleyball - Sydney 3 Star FIVB Event

This last weekend we saw some of the best volleyball players in the world competing for a medal at the Sydney 3 Star FIVB World Tour event.

The entry list for the United States was:

Women:

  • Kerri Walsh Jennings/Brooke Sweat
  • Betsi Flint/Emily Day
  • Brittany Hochevar/Carly Wopat
  • Brittany Howard/ Kelly Reeves

Men:

  • Taylor Crabb/Jake Gibb
  • Stafford Slick/Billy Allen
  • Theo Brunner/Reid Priddy
  • Casey Patterson/Chase Budinger
  • John Hyden/ Ryan Doherty
  • Bill Kolinske/Miles Evans

The tournament was a grand event at the beaches in Sydney. USA was able to place in both men's and women's.

Betsi and Emily were able to reach the finals, hower they were ultimately defeated by the Australians Laird/Palmer. Taking home a silver medal in a 3 star event leading into the Olympic Qualifications.

Another women's team that was able to stand out was the new pairing of Walsh Jennings/Sweat. They were able to get to the Semi Finals also losing to the Australians, but able to defeat China to take home the bronze medal.

As for the men's side they were able to pick up two 9th place finishes, two 5th place finishes and a bronze medal finish. Stafford Slick/Billy Allen were able to come back together for their first tournament since the 2017 season and pick up a big win against fellow USA team Taylor Crabb/Jake Gibb in order to reach the semi finals ultimately losing to Italy, but coming together and beating France to pick up a bronze finish.

We continue to see a mix up of partners leading into the 2020 Tokyo Qualification. Will there be any changes soon that can stir the ecosystem in the USA volleyball world or will we continue to see the same teams fighting for a top 2 place to go to Tokyo? We will have to keep watching and see where these players can take us.

Congratulations to those teams who have won medals in Sydney. Looking forward to seeing more from all of you.
