Goal Development: 4 questions for every Goal

1) Why/What’s the benefit? This may seem trivial, but if your goals are generic, then you won’t know the specific effect your goals may have or the value their achievement could truly bring to you.

Goals may fall into common categories like travel, self-improvement or humanitarianism, but specific goals in each category will differ from person to person. You need to know what your specific goals are so that you can understand the “why behind the why”.

Understanding the specific benefit or reason it’s important to you will also help you rank each goal on your bucket list of items you want to attain in your life.

2) How long have you wanted to do this?Knowing the amount of time we have spent thinking about a goal will help us rank it among all the goals we have for our life. Knowing how long you’ve thought about it will help you understand the urgency behind it.

It’s important that we focus on how long we’ve been thinking about a goal, to understand how important taking action steps are to achieving it.

Is it a dream worth fulfilling? If so, you need to take your goals out of the realm of dreams to the realm of possibility. If you don’t it will only ever be a dream. So, what’s holding you back?”

3) Why have you not been able to do it yet? This may seem apparent and will have a recurring answer (money, time, resources). But it’s important to understand that your “reasons” are often just excuses as to why you can’t start. If there’s a “reason” (which is just a lie you tell yourself), then you can’t achieve it. But if it’s just an excuse, then you recognize the lie and can work around it.

4) When will you be able to accomplish your goal if you don’t start now?  This is VERY powerful because it demands you address your procrastination, face your lies or laziness—or FEAR—and begin changing your circumstances and mindset.

Too many times we sell ourselves on the notion that it’s just a dream and can never be a reality. The more you sell yourself that bag of nonsense the more it becomes the truth!

Dare to admit that what you’ve been telling yourself your whole life is a lie!

Stop believing that nonsense and get yourself going. Even the smallest baby step will grow into bigger steps just by the action—not the decision—but the action of doing something. Something small grows into something big and before you know it. Your goal is attained. Once attained, it will encourage and spur you on to the next and the next. There is nothing like victory to incentivize more wins!
