Should Face Recognition be Regulated?

Microsoft’s president is calling on the U.S. Government to regulate facial recognition technology, which is used for everything from unlocking some iPhones and identifying people in photographs. Brad Smith warns of the ability of governments to track people’s movements and the ability to compile databases of people who attend political rallies. He also said industry alone cannot regulate the technology. “The only effective way to manage the use of technology by a government is for the government proactively to manage this use itself,” he wrote.
