She is the granddaughter of Canadian actors Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, and great-granddaughter of Canadian politician Tommy Douglas.[2] She has an older half sister named Michelle Kath (from her mother, Camelia's relationship with Terry Kath) who is married to actor Adam Sinclair.[3]

As a teen, Sutherland trained at the Crossroads Drama Conservatory in Los Angeles, before heading to New York to study at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts.[4] In her final semester, she wrote and acted in a one-woman play, The Skin of a Grape.[2]
